Texas by the way got an overhaul of its gun and discreet carry (CHL) laws, many effective Sep. 1, 2013:
--Mandatory carry-license training has been reduced from 10-15 hours to 4-6 hours.
--Renewals are now a paperwork and taxing process that can be concluded online, with no new testing required.
--Instructors no longer go to the DPS range for testing, they now test each other at a range of their own choosing.
--The risk CHLs used to face for having a gun momentarily show through concealment has been mitigated.
--The protections of the Motorist Protection Act have been extended somewhat to colleges and universities.
--The preemption law got some teeth, and BB and air guns are included.
--Hotels that want to ban your civil right to arms must give you notice or face minor criminal penalties.
--A program to provide armed guards in schools ("School Marshals") is underway, though it will be a while before it is robust.
--The abusive policy of destroying firearms in police custody has ended. Those guns must be sold, the money used to fight crime.
--The "SA" and "NSA" distinction between semi-autos and non-semi-autos has been abandoned.
--Using your social security number for identification in the CHL program is now banned.
--Some other smaller changes have also been made. They are noted in the update summaries at GunLaws.com, below.
--The DPS website may not have caught up with all these changes, but will as soon as they are able.

The George Zimmerman self-defense trial that ended in acquittal pointed out that social media and racial bigotry can be used to bring charges where none exist, and news media can create a circus to attack innocent victims of criminal assault.
Despite repeated calls for civil-rights charges, the FBI twice found that no grounds for such charges exist, once, during the actual trial, and again afterwards, when race baiters on TV demanded such actions. The media failed to report that no grounds for the charges exist, and that no case would be brought after boisterous demands commanded hours of airtime. Pundits preferred to allow the public to simply fuggedaboutit, which they are very good at doing.
According to a leading private investigator involved in such cases:
"Today cops, prosecutor, judges and news reporters often scour the Internet to find information on person's of interest or suspects. If you move fast enough, helpful and self-serving information can be posted for these decision makers to consider. Trayvon Martin True Story Leaks Out
Bogus Charges Evaporate
Haulder Stuffins, EPI; Wire Service (Philadelphia) -- Trayvon Martin, a vicious young black thug with a sordid history, shot and killed in self defense during an assault on a block-watch captain in Florida, has been portrayed as a folk hero by a man who is sometimes referred to as one of the nation's most prominent black racists, Al Sharpton, with knowing support from the mainstream media.

The media, which had consistently fabricated details of the event that led up to Martin's justifiable-homicide demise, has promoted Sharpton in the past, and lent massive support to nationwide rallies to glorify the dead hoodlum, suppressing facts of the case to aid Sharpton's campaign.
Martin, who had been suspended from school three times prior to his assault on the block-watch captain, was found roaming aimlessly on a rainy night when he was reported to police by George Zimmerman, the innocent man elected captain by his neighbors on the block-watch patrol. The media falsely called Zimmerman a self-appointed vigilante. Vigilantism is illegal, but no slander charges have been brought. Block watches are honorable efforts established in troubled neighborhoods under police supervision.
The neighborhood Mr. Zimmerman patrolled had been repeatedly victimized by black and other criminal elements in the past. Martin was dressed and acting like a suspicious person on the night in question, drawing the attention of the alert block-watch captain.

To help portray the criminal as an innocent victim, the media knowingly saturated its coverage of the events with angelic images of the perpetrator as an 11-year-old tot, when in fact he was a five-foot-eleven football player and mixed-martial-arts boxer who went by the social-media moniker of "No Limit Nigga." He posed with false gold teeth known as "grills" in ghetto slang and both middle fingers pointing in a threatening manner.
Trayvon seeks to score active ingredients for Watermelon juice intoxicant
Police found the mortally wounded 17-year-old with a can of watermelon juice and Skittles candy, ingredients used to make "lean," also known as "purple drank" and "sizzurp," a cheap and potent intoxicant popular with ghetto youth and hip-hop slum culture, which Martin bragged about using since 2011 on social media. Toxicology reports after his death showed liver damage likely attributable to abuse of the concoction.

Fearing this would undermine their preferred narrative of child-like innocence, the media unethically changed the watermelon juice to "ice tea," even though the evidence photo, available to all of them, clearly identified a can of Arizona Watermelon Fruit Juice Cocktail. The beverage contains no tea at all. Justifications sprang up that, well, it was produced by the Arizona Ice Tea company but these were equally false, because the company is the Arizona Beverage Company Limited, based in Westbury, New York. Caught lying red handed, they never did issue corrections, which would eventually unravel the fable and force admitting the entire story was a fabricated con job. Watermelon-gate.
Observers pointed out that blacks' love of watermelon is a common racial stereotype, and even though accurate, the media would rather hide such truth than tell it, because it makes them uncomfortable. This is typical of racial bigotry -- fear of admitting differences and natural stereotypes, therefor hating (and suppressing) that which you hate. The media attempts to hide this character flaw by calling others racist, a common but reprehensible technique, and certain indicator of repressed bias. It is characteristic of liberals in general, part of what defines them.

A Harvard study titled "Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?" looks at figures for "intentional deaths" throughout continental Europe and compares them with the U.S. showing more gun control does not necessarily lead to lower death rates or violent crime.
Because the findings so clearly demonstrate that more gun laws may in fact increase death rates, the study says that "the mantra that more guns mean more deaths and that fewer guns, therefore, mean fewer deaths" is wrong. The results got exposure everywhere but the lamestream media:
For example, when the study shows numbers for Eastern European gun ownership and corresponding murder rates, it is readily apparent that less guns to do not mean less death. In Russia, where the rate of gun ownership is 4,000 per 100,000 inhabitants, the murder rate was 20.52 per 100,000 in 2002. That same year in Finland, where the rater of gun ownership is exceedingly higher--39,000 per 100,000 -- the murder rate was almost nil, at 1.98 per 100,000.
Looking at Western Europe, the study shows that Norway "has far and away Western Europe's highest household gun ownership rate (32%), but also its lowest murder rate."
And when the study focuses on intentional deaths by looking at the U.S. vs. continental Europe, the findings are no less revealing. The U.S., often labeled as the most violent nation in the world by gun-control proponents, comes in 7th behind Russia, Estonia, Lativa, Lithuania, Belarus, and the Ukraine in murders. America also only ranks 22nd in suicides.
The murder rate in Russia, where handguns are banned, is 30.6. The U.S. rate is 7.8. The numbers presented in the Harvard study support the contention that among the nations studied, those with more gun control tend toward higher death rates.
"There is a compound assertion that (a) guns are uniquely available in the United States compared with other modern developed nations, which is why (b) the United States has by far the highest murder rate. Though these assertions have been endlessly repeated, statement (b) is, in fact, false and statement (a) is substantially so."

Because a driver's license is the main form of ID relied upon by federal firearms dealers, deferred-action students approved by Mr. Obama are now apparently eligible to buy firearms and ammunition at retail, according to leading experts. It's not clear if the national NICS system has this special federal class of people singled out for special treatment in the NICS Index, the list of prohibited possessors. Someone should ask, but skeptics don't expect authorities to do their jobs and do so.

A study commissioned by the National Shooting Sports Foundation reveals that first-time gun buyers are largely active in one or more shooting activities and that women are motivated to purchase their first firearm predominately for personal defense.
The online research involved consumers aged 22 to 65 who bought their first firearm during 2012. Key findings included: the majority of first-time buyers (60.3%) tend to be active, using their gun once per month, with one in five reporting usage of once a week or more. Target shooting is by far the most popular activity among first-time gun owners (84.3%), followed by hunting (37.7%) and plinking (27.4%). Fox Business filed a report on the soaring retail sales of firearms, quoting NSSF Public Affairs Director Michael Bazinet. And in other news: Discreet Carry Jumps Among Florida Women: More than one million Floridians have their concealed carry permit, but the gender and age bracket showing the largest increase might surprise you -- it's women 66 years of age and older.
Their numbers have jumped 619% since 2004, reports the Orlando Sentinel, and total nearly 35,000 individuals licensed to carry a firearm in the Sunshine State and 35 other states. The Sentinel also reports that women in the youngest age bracket, 21 to 35, with pistol permits increased 463% to more than 40,000. I've admired your logical, analytical thinking for a long time and have always been pleased that you represent us so well as intelligent thinkers in your "big media" appearances. I have not always been in agreement with you on the issue of illegals, and I suppose I could be surprised at what appears to be, from my perspective, your turnaround. But you are skilled at correlating data and juxtaposing them in unexpected ways, so I am not surprised that you discover something politically advantageous in this issue. Alan, I loved your article on the silly gun buy-back program. I have to tell you I couldn't resist taking advantage of the libs to get rid of a couple of worthless guns for a decent return. I'm retired and on a fixed income, so the gift cards helped me stock up the travel trailer with food for a 9 day trip to Nevada to attend two classes at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute. Alan, Your piece on MAG is wonderful, so much so I had to laugh at the absurdity of the whole process. Every point you raise surrounding these buy-back schemes should have been asked by journalists everywhere. However, besides the agendas and biases, most journalists operate from positions of abject ignorance about most matters beyond the things that are important to liberals. Thanks to your knowledge and perspective, I would at least hope that some of the less lazy among the press would use the information you provide to possibly pause and consider their position. But, then again, most of them have never allowed themselves to become confused by the facts. What a way to go through life; governed by cognitive templates provided by others with no critical thinking skills whatsoever. Pretty sad.
